With spring approaching, it’s time to get out ahead of weeds before they become a problem for your customers. Making pre-emergent herbicide applications to lawns is likely top of mind, but protecting landscape beds is just as important. We’ve put together a list of granular pre-emergents so you can ensure weed-free turf and beds this spring:
- BroadStar: For lawn care operators looking for a “one-and-done” approach, BroadStar delivers an impressive five to six months of residual control. BroadStar uses flumioxazin (0.25%) to combat a broad spectrum of over 60 broadleaf and grassy weeds, including hard-to-control types like hairy bittercress and spurge.
- Crew: Combining dithiopyr (0.25%) and isoxaben (0.5%), Crew pre-emergently controls 120+ weeds and provides early post-emergent control of crabgrass. Lasting about four months, Crew is a versatile choice because it’s safe to use on over 400 ornamentals and can be applied above or below mulch.
- Specticle G: Providing six to eight months of residual control—one of the longest durations available—Specticle G is particularly effective when applied over mulch. Specticle G contains indaziflam (0.0224%) and controls over 90 broadleaf and grassy weeds along with annual sedges.
- FreeHand 1.75G: One of the few granular pre-emergents that specifically targets nutsedge, FreeHand offers four months of control of dozens of weeds. FreeHand uses two active ingredients: dimethenamid-P (0.75%) and pendimethalin (1%).
- Snapshot: With a label covering over 125 different weed species—more than any other granular pre-emergent in our lineup—Snapshot provides around three months of control. Snapshot works best when it’s applied beneath mulch, and it must be covered or watered in within three days to avoid photodegradation. Snapshot contains trifluralin (2%) and isoxaben (0.5%).
- Dimension DG Pro: Lasting about three months, Dimension DG Pro (0.25% dithiopyr) focuses on controlling annual grassy weeds and has limited efficacy against broadleaf weeds. It has a small particle formulation for better distribution and can provide early post-emergent control of crabgrass.
- Trammel: An economical option, Trammel contains trifluralin (5%) and offers around two months of residual control. Trammel mainly targets grasses and select broadleaf weeds. It’s best to apply Trammel beneath mulch, and, to prevent photodegradation, cover or water it in within two to three days.
