If you manage a collegiate softball facility, you may be aware of the NCAA’s new padding requirement. If not, here’s what you need to know.
Rule 2.15 states that sideline and home run fences constructed of hard materials (e.g., wood, concrete, or brick) must be padded by January 1, 2027.
This applies to all fields hosting NCAA softball competitions. The specifications state that padding must start no higher than one foot off the ground and extend either to the top of the wall structure or up to six feet from the ground, whichever is shorter.
You can find the rule on page 17 of the 2026-2027 Rules Book. Also, keep in mind that the double first base requirement enacted for Division I competition in 2026 will apply to Divisions II and III for 2027. That rule can be found on Page 15.
What You Should Do
Between measuring, ordering, and the time it takes to manufacture padding, it’s best to order early. If you place an order this summer, you’ll be in good shape in terms of lead times and the opportunity fall break will provide for installation.
