Employee Spotlights: Tom Salkowski and Mike Denny
This month, we’re shining the spotlight on our location in St. Peters, Missouri. Meet two of the dedicated team members there: Tom Salkowski and Mike Denny.
Tom celebrated four years at ATS in April of this year. He enjoys the camaraderie he has with his coworkers and the sense of accomplishment at the end of the day, no matter what it throws at them. He takes great pride in his work and shared, “I want to be known as the go-to guy for getting things done properly, efficiently, and on time.”
Tom attended McCluer North High School in Florissant, MO, where he met his wife of 38 years. They have a 34-year-old daughter and a 6-year-old autistic grandson, Landon. Tom described Landon as “Papaw’s little buddy” and shared that spending time with his grandson is one of his favorite things to do when he’s not at work. His family also has a black Schipperke named Pepper. One of their traditions is that at Christmas, everyone in the family open presents from youngest to oldest.
Something he didn’t know before working here? Some people are really passionate — and competitive — about their lawns. It’s their passion that drives him to find solutions to turf issues every day. Although this industry wasn’t always on Tom’s radar, helping people was. As a kid, he wanted to be a police officer when he grew up. “I enjoy coming to work every day and I consider all my coworkers friends.” Some of his coworkers may be surprised to learn that Tom also has several tattoos!
It’s no secret, though, that Tom is a fan of the St. Louis Blues and the Seattle Seahawks. When he’s not busy cheering them on, he likes to spend time playing golf and completing small projects around the house. Tom and his wife also enjoy travelling together. They spent a week on a canal cruise through Burgundy, France, where they visited Dijon (known for its mustard) and then spent three days in Paris.
Warehouse Associate in St. Peters, MO
Employee since 2018
Mike started at ATS as a delivery driver, moving to warehouse operations and counter sales in 2019. He has been in the industry since he was 15 years old, working in landscaping most recently before joining ATS. He enjoys the opportunity to help people find solutions to problems every day, and the science behind those solutions is a passion of his.
Mike graduated from St. Louis–Meramec with a horticulture degree and dreams of researching the medicinal power of plants. While those dreams have morphed over the years, his background prepared him well for his current position. One of his favorite things about the job is that he still uses his scientific knowledge to help customers understand and solve their turf issues.
Mike and his wife Carrie have a 13-year-old daughter who swims competitively, and they enjoy spending time together outdoors. When he’s not supporting his daughter in swimming, Mike likes to spend time hiking and hunting with her on their family property. He also fishes and does amateur radio — recently talking to someone in Slovenia! He’s a fan of the St. Louis Blues, the Mizzou Tigers, and the St. Louis Cardinals. Mike’s coworkers may be surprised to learn that he’s also been skydiving.
Something he’s learned at ATS? The equipment side of the business was new to him, so it’s been interesting to learn about Steel Green and the different sprayer/spreader machines. Everyone on the St. Peters team has a unique role — and a sense of humor, according to Mike. From practical advice to practical jokes, the people are what makes the job so rewarding. “It’s great working here with everybody,” Mike shared.
