With drought conditions going back to last year, and the combination of extreme cold we’ve seen recently with relatively little snow cover throughout much of the Midwest, athletic field managers or anyone who maintains Bermuda have been growing a bit nervous about how their turf will wake up come spring. Traditionally, pre-emergent crabgrass control is applied in the spring. Even more traditionally, it is applied about the same time as the forsythia blooms, which is usually mid to late April in Central Indiana. However, with today’s technologies, tradition is no longer the norm.
The line, “if you build it, they will come” is well known from the movie Field of Dreams. I like to apply a variation of this line to my methodology for growing healthy turf. If you build healthy soil (“it”) then what “comes” of this practice is healthy turf. Or in other words, “If you build it, then it will come.”
