Formed through the decomposition of plant and microbial residues in the soil, humic and fulvic acids are natural compounds that function as biostimulants. They’re common ingredients in liquid nutrition products since they enhance nutrient availability, improve soil health, and support rooting.
The Nutrient Aspect
One of the primary benefits of humic and fulvic acids is their ability to naturally complex and chelate nutrients in the soil. This process keeps essential elements like iron, phosphorus, and potassium in plant-available forms, making them more available for root uptake.
Research from Iowa State and Virginia Tech has shown that humic substances specifically improve nutrient availability and use efficiency while promoting root development. Using products that contain humic acid in a spray fertilizer program can support these processes.
Improved Soil Conditions
Beyond nutrient availability, humic and fulvic acids improve soil chemistry and structure. Specifically, they contribute to an increased cation exchange capacity (CEC), allowing soils to retain and supply nutrients more effectively over time. Additionally, they promote soil aggregation, which improves airflow and increases water-holding capacity.
Humic substances also stimulate soil biological activity by serving as a carbon source for beneficial microorganisms. Increased microbial activity enhances nutrient cycling and improves soil structure.
Better Roots
Improved root growth is one of the most noticeable benefits. The increased biologic activity promoted by these acids stimulates root initiation. Deeper, more extensive roots allow the turf plant to access water and nutrients more efficiently, leading to better color, density, and visual quality. It also means better stress tolerance, which is especially important since summer is right around the corner.
Many of the liquid nutrition products we offer make use of fulvic and/or humic acids. Reach out to your ATS sales rep to learn more about these products so you can make the most of your inputs and deliver healthier turf.
