I consistently recommend fall wetting agent applications to my customers, and there are two main reasons why.
- Microbial activity is the only factor that breaks wetting agents down, and microbial activity slows as temperatures cool. So, product applied in the fall will last for a long time because very little microbial activity is occurring.
- Fall applications will result in more even moisture content in the soil profile (especially in the top six inches), which is key to growing a strong root system going into the winter.
Keep Going Through November
Many superintendents stop putting down wetting agents around this time of year because they’re getting more consistent rain, and they think they don’t need them. Unfortunately, they often end up with hydrophobic soil going into the winter and have a litany of issues as a result. That’s why I recommend making applications through November here in the Northeast to keep water moving properly.
Dormant Applications
I always recommend making a dormant wetting agent application over the winter, too. These applications help keep moisture off the surface during freeze-thaw cycles, which we experience a lot up here in New England. They will also remain effective well into March, which lines up perfectly with spring applications (usually made at the end of March or the beginning of April).
