Before entering the industry, Philip studied at the University of Illinois, graduating with a B.S. in Forestry and later an M.S. in Forest Science. He is also involved with the Saint Louis Arborist Association, Saint Louis Professional Grounds Management Society, and Mississippi Valley Golf Course Superintendents Association.
