Jim Hess and two other recipients pose with their awards

We’re pleased to share that our very own Jim Hess, a golf sales representative serving Central and Northern Indiana, was recently honored with the Award of Achievement from the Midwest Regional Turf Foundation (MRTF). Jim and two other recipients, Ryan Cummings and Delynn McWilliams, accepted the awards at a reception in Lafayette, Indiana, on July 12.

The MRTF supports turf research and education at Purdue University, and its annual Award of Achievement recognizes those who have dedicated themselves to the turfgrass industry in Indiana. Jim shared after receiving the award, “I am incredibly honored to be recognized by my colleagues for my contributions to the industry.” He has spent more than twenty-five years in the turfgrass industry, with a background in golf course maintenance before coming to ATS three years ago.

After attending the University of Massachusetts, Jim began his career at Fort Wayne Country Club. There he trained under Brian Chalifoux, whom he credits as the greatest influence in his career: “He gave me an opportunity at Fort Wayne CC and taught me strong agronomic programs, as well as a work ethic you need to have to be successful in the industry. I still use what he taught me today.” Jim then served as the superintendent at South Bend Country Club for five years before becoming the superintendent at Meridian Hills Country Club in Indianapolis, where he served for fifteen years before joining ATS.

Jim’s career has included several volunteer positions, as well. He has served in numerous turf organizations, including as president of the MRTF, Indiana GCSAA, and Michiana GCSA. He encourages industry newcomers to follow his example: “Get involved. There is a great network of people in the industry that you can learn from. It is also extremely rewarding to be involved in something bigger than yourself that gives back to the industry that has been such a big part of our lives.”

When not working or volunteering, Jim enjoys spending his time with his wife, two daughters, two grandsons, and two Vizslas. His other hobbies include golfing, riding motorcycles, shooting sports, and cooking.

Congratulations on your Award of Achievement, Jim!
