The days are getting shorter, the nights longer and the temperatures are falling. Before we know it the ground will be covered with a blanket of white and our lawn care season will be done.

If you want healthy turf next spring, a few things should be done to the turf before winter sets in.

1.Aeration – In this blogger’s opinion, aerating every fall is the most important step to a healthy lawn. During the warm months the turf becomes compacted from mowing, foot traffic and hot temperatures. Aeration helps to loosen the compaction and allows air, water and nutrients to penetrate, which promotes root expansion and new growth. This creates a thicker, healthier lawn, which results in fewer weeds and the ability to become more disease resistant.

2.Mowing – Your final cut should be at a lower height than in season cuts.

3.Leaf Removal – Make sure all leaves are mulched and removed and not lying on top of the turf.

4.Fertilizer – A high nitrogen fertilizer is recommended in November at a rate of 0.5 to 1 lb of N per 1,000 square feet. Advanced Turf Solutions Professional Turf Fertilizer 34-0-4 is a great choice. This application should be done after your final cut while the lawn is still green.

Your lawn will thank you and show its appreciation in the following spring and summer months. Contact your ATS rep to get your fall product. Thank you for a great season!
